Yes, it’s possible to use a sewing machine to create embroidery designs. Learn how to do it, different techniques - and find top offers on sewing machines!
Being alive in the technological age truly is a wonder! Yes, it’s entirely possible to use a sewing machine to create beautiful embroidery designs and, in fact, there are even machines available now specifically intended for this purpose alone.
There are two ways in which you can indulge in your machine-based embroidery passions:
Free motion embroidery is just like drawing, only with thread instead of a pencil! On a standard sewing machine, you simply drop the feed dogs (which are the teeth that move the fabric) and attach a free motion foot in their place.
This allows you to manipulate the fabric however you want to, so you can let your imagination run wild!
There are lots of different techniques you can use to create beautiful imagery. Adjusting the sewing speed, for example, or moving the embroidery hoop quickly or slowly will allow you to create different textures and line thicknesses.
Or what about trying your hand at thread sketching, where straight stitches are used in overlapping ways to make it look as though you’re actually drawing with pencil or charcoal. A very interesting effect!
It’s also possible to do fabric applique, with different shapes attached over each other using zigzag or straight stitches.
Here, your sewing machine’s internal computer or embroidery module can be set up to control the needle and embroidery hoop automatically.
Modern sewing machines usually come with inbuilt stitch patterns, so all you have to do is programme it with your preferred design and then marvel at how the machine moves to form the pattern, before your very eyes!
Depending on the machine you have, you may also be able to use speciality techniques, such as 3D puff embroidery (where you can achieve raised dimensional lettering) or cutwork, where a decorative border is sewn and the interior fabric cut away to create more intricate patterns.
As you can see, there’s a lot that can be done on a sewing machine these days. If you’re keen to break away from the conventions of cutting patterns and really want to embrace your creative side, this might well be the way to go.
We often have deals, discounts and offers running on sewing machines - and today is no different!
